Spurs Winger Set for Girona Switch

Tottenham winger Bryan Gil is finally set to call time on his frustrating spell in north London, with a permanent move to La Liga side Girona all but confirmed. Spurs and the Catalan side have agreed a deal worth around £8.6m (€10m), with the 24-year-old expected to undergo a medical ahead of the La Liga transfer deadline.
It ends a difficult chapter for the Spaniard, who joined Tottenham from Sevilla in 2021 but never managed to establish himself in the Premier League.
A Career That Never Took Off in England
Signed as part of a £21m-plus-Erik Lamela deal, Gil arrived at Spurs with a reputation as one of Spain’s brightest young talents. But over four years and three loan spells, he never convinced successive managers that he could adapt to the physicality and demands of English football.
Across 43 appearances in all competitions — just 14 of them starts — Gil failed to score a single goal for Tottenham, and his only two assists both came in his first season, both of them for Harry Kane, first in the Europa Conference League and another away at Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Injuries didn’t help, and while Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou all gave him fleeting opportunities, none placed consistent trust in the winger, and Spurs boss Thomas Frank seems happy to move Gil on to pastures new.

Finding His Feet Back in Spain
While England proved a tough fit, Spain has always brought out Gil’s best football. After loan spells at Valencia and a Europa League-winning stint at Sevilla, he spent last season on loan with Girona, making 32 apperances. Despite injury setbacks, the winger's traits are well-suited to La Liga’s style, and Girona have been keen all summer to bring him back permanently.
Initially hoping Spurs would terminate his contract, Girona have instead struck an agreement to pay just under £9m; significantly less than Tottenham's payment back in 2021.
What Next for Gil?
At 24, there is still plenty of time for Gil to carve out a successful career. His ability has never been in doubt, boasting a skill set that made him a standout at youth level with Sevilla and Spain. He was part of Spain’s U19 Euros-winning squad in 2019, won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and has earned five senior international caps, scoring once.
A permanent move to Girona feels like the right reset. For Spurs, it draws a line under what will go down as a misjudged signing, with Gil failing to live up to expectations in England. For Girona, it’s the chance to add a technical winger with plenty of La Liga experience to a squad hoping to compete at the upper end of Spain's top flight.
Sometimes, a transfer just isn’t right for player or club, and in this case, all parties seem to benefit from the move.
