Ex-Southampton CEO lands role at ambitious WSL club

Former Southampton CEO Martin Semmens is making a high-profile return to football — this time leading the charge at London City Lionesses, one of the most ambitious clubs in the Women’s Super League. Semmens, who spent six years at Saints before his departure in 2023, has been appointed CEO as the Lionesses prepare for their first season in the top flight.

London City Lionesses: A Club Breaking Boundaries

London City Lionesses made history by becoming the first club to earn promotion to the WSL without being affiliated with a men’s team — a significant moment in the evolution of the women’s game. Backed by American entrepreneur Michele Kang, the club has made its intentions clear: it’s here to compete, grow, and redefine success in women’s football.

Semmens Ready for a New Challenge

Sharing his thoughts on the move, Semmens said:
"I’m excited to be joining London City at such a defining moment in the club’s journey. What Michele, Kynisca, and the team have built is phenomenal — it truly highlights the enormous potential in women’s football. I’m looking forward to the season ahead and building the infrastructure that enables long-term success."

Kang Confident in Semmens' Vision

Owner Michele Kang welcomed Semmens to the club, highlighting his proven leadership:
"Martin brings a wealth of experience that will help shape a high-performance culture, expand our commercial reach, grow our fanbase, and solidify our position in the WSL. He shares our Kynisca values and our vision for the women’s game. With our stadium development and new training centre in Aylesford underway, we’re entering a hugely exciting chapter."

VAR has once again sparked outrage in the Premier League after Fulham’s opening goal against Chelsea was controversially disallowed at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
